Every ten years, the small Bavarian village of Oberammergau comes alive for a tradition unlike any other. The Oberammergau Passion Play is performed exclusively by the village’s residents, bringing together hundreds of actors, musicians, and community members to portray the life, suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The tradition began in 1634, when the people of Oberammergau made a solemn vow during the plague to perform the Passion Play every ten years if their community was spared. According to tradition, the village was spared—and the promise continued for nearly four centuries.

What began as a humble performance near the village church evolved into an internationally renowned production at the Oberammergau Passion Play Theatre, where approximately 4,500 visitors can experience the performance.
